About All
All is an American punk rock band from Los Angeles that emerged in 1987 from the ashes of the Descendents, carrying forward a legacy of melodic hardcore that would help define the pop-punk genre for decades to come. Founded by bassist Karl Alvarez, drummer Bill Stevenson, and guitarist Stephen Egerton after Descendents frontman Milo Aukerman left to pursue his PhD, All initially recruited singer Dave Smalley and later Scott Reynolds, maintaining the band's signature blend of aggressive punk energy with irresistibly catchy melodies. Their sound evolved from the raw, coffee-fueled intensity of early albums like "Allroy Sez" to the more polished but equally passionate approach heard on records like "Pummel" and "Breaking Things," showcasing their ability to craft both blistering punk anthems and surprisingly tender moments like their gospel-tinged cover "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." What makes All distinctive is their unwavering commitment to emotional honesty wrapped in three-chord perfection-whether delivering the rockabilly-punk hybrid "Hot Rod Lincoln" or the sugar-rush energy of "Bubble Gum," they've consistently balanced aggression with accessibility in ways that influenced countless pop-punk and emo bands. With 225 songs across 29 albums, All has proven remarkably prolific while maintaining their core identity, serving as both a continuation of the Descendents' legacy and a vital creative force in their own right. Their cultural impact extends far beyond their Los Angeles roots, helping to bridge the gap between 1980s hardcore punk and the mainstream pop-punk explosion of the 1990s, all while never compromising their DIY ethics or melodic sensibilities.
