About Cibo Matto
Cibo Matto was a Japanese-American duo formed in New York in 1994 who blended trip-hop, jazz, pop, and experimental sounds with playfully surreal lyrics often centered around food and pop culture. Their debut album "Viva! La Woman" (1996) featured cult classics like "Birthday Cake" and "Know Your Chicken," establishing their signature sound of Miho Hatori's dreamy vocals over Yuka Honda's eclectic production. Songs like "Sci-Fi Wasabi" showcased their ability to seamlessly merge Eastern and Western musical influences while maintaining an irresistibly quirky sensibility. Though they disbanded and reunited multiple times, their innovative fusion of genres and multicultural perspective influenced a generation of indie and electronic artists, cementing their status as cult icons of 90s alternative music.
