(Let's go)
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh (you take it, you take it)
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh (louder, louder)
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead, long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
Missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone, there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
That shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
I'm just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?
Now, I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, shield
Missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Lights up)
(Come on, come on, come on)
(I can't hear)
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing (oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Roman Calvary choirs are singing (oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Be my mirror, my sword, shield (oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
Missionaries in a foreign field (oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
For some reason I can't explain (oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh)
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh (everybody put your hands in the air)
(Everybody put your hands in the air, please everybody, put your hands in the air)

About This Song

"Viva La Vida" is a haunting meditation on the fleeting nature of power and the inevitable fall from grace, told through the perspective of a deposed ruler reflecting on his lost empire. The song explores themes of hubris, mortality, and the cyclical nature of history, with lyrics that draw from biblical imagery and historical references to create a universal narrative about rise and decline. Musically, the track marked a dramatic departure for Coldplay, featuring orchestral arrangements with prominent strings, baroque-influenced melodies, and a driving rhythm that builds to an anthemic climax without relying on traditional guitar-heavy rock structures. The production, helmed by Brian Eno, creates a cinematic scope that mirrors the grandiosity of the lyrical themes, while Chris Martin's vocals convey both melancholy and defiance. The "pillars of salt and pillars of sand" metaphor serves as the song's emotional core, suggesting that even the mightiest achievements are built on unstable foundations doomed to crumble. The track resonated deeply with listeners during the 2008 financial crisis, as its themes of fallen kingdoms and lost security felt particularly relevant to a world experiencing economic collapse. Beyond its historical allegory, the song functions as a personal reflection on fame, success, and the isolation that can accompany great achievement. Its combination of vulnerability and epic scope, paired with an irresistibly catchy melody, helped it become one of the most successful alternative rock songs of the 2000s.

It reminds me of the French Revolution that started in 1789. But other than that I think it is a beautifully written song that is one of Coldplay's best. Congrats to you.

Mmmm,Intersting possible meanings. Whether you want to take a modern view and look at it being about America and Bush, or possibly a bit further back and make it the British Empire and the monarchy, or you could even go further back and say prehaps the Catholic Church & Popes?Bloody good song though

This song reminds me of the Russian Revolution a little bit. Maybe it's just because we're studying it! I could see this being from Czar Nicholas II's point of view. That's just me.

Reminds me of my own highs and lows of my own life. Kings and paupers are the same. The mighty fall hard and the smallest can only die or move upward. Emotional composition and lyrics.

Yea i think that the song is referring to the french revolution because it mentions revolutionaries, the sound of drums (which were played before the guillotine and roman catholics...very well written....amazing song

I think that when coldplay wrote this, it was supposed to go with the album theme(French revolution) as you can tell by the cover art, but at the same time was designed to reach out to Roman Catholics and give a positive message in whatever way that you look at it.

I never heard of Roman cavalries ever doing anything except fighting wars -- certainly not singing -- maybe it's Roman Catholic Choirs.

All these comments are so deep. You all really know history and religion. So many possibilities - Jesus, Claudius, Napoleon, French revolution, Russian Revolution and Czar Nicholas, George Bush. Maybe it's about King Edward VIII who abdicated the throne in 1936 when he married an American divorcee. They say he was friendly to Nazi Germany, at least until the germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

who doesn't love this song?!It is just plain awesome!!!Say it with me now.Awe-Some!!!!!Tee-hee!!!!

I don't think this is speaking of one person, rather a country, government, religion, heirachy that the world recognize(s/d) as great, until the truth of their greatness crumbled (pillars of salt and sand won't hold for long) and was exposed. I believe this is really about the current state of the world at war and what the truth really is. The "missionaries" referring to the soldiers sent to a war sold as "liberating" the mid-east. Either way, the song is beautifully written and thought provoking

Your all dumb. Respectfully. Anyways clearly this song is about Uncle Buck. Uncle Buck lost his hole world and used be king just like in this song. He had to fight and prove he was worthy.
  • Anonymous
its probably about the french revolution when king louis was ruling but then had his head cut off and that is why it says in the song "i used to rule the world" and the part when hte crowd sings "now the old king is dead, long live the king.

i think this song is just amazing the way its so poetic and the fact that it has the power to bring all of these different opions and views on the meaning of the song together makes it beautiful and unique as far as the world of music/lyrics go!

Yes,this is truly a greatly written love song, heartbroken is what he's become thats why he sleeps alone, his missionary is in a forein land(his lost love)and I doubt she's in Germany. A song sung in pain. BLUES.

i think its about power being passed to and from people and that you only have it for a short amount of time. it could also be about the french revolution too.

Clearly an introspective Louis XVI just prior to execution, musing about his fall from grace, and feeling that for some reason heaven has turned it's back on him. Very compelling, and a universal sentiment for anyone who struggles to understand why a earth shattering loss has befallen them. Louis XVI was a devout Catholic, hence the references to Roman Catholic choirs singing upon his death yet St. Peter denying him entrance to heaven.

everyone has their own interpretation of the song. you don't have to fight over which interpretation is correct. probably none of you are. the only people who know the real meaning of the song are the songwriters and coldplay.

That's a typo, it's not Roman Catholic choirs, it's Roman cavalry choirs.
