About Das Efx
Das EFX is an American hip-hop duo from Brooklyn, New York (not Petersburg as listed), formed in 1991, who revolutionized rap with their wildly inventive verbal acrobatics and cartoon-influenced slang that became known as "iggedy" style. The group, consisting of Dray (Andre Weston) and Skoob (Willie Hines), burst onto the scene with their debut album "Dead Serious" (1992), featuring the infectious hit "They Want EFX," which showcased their signature rapid-fire delivery peppered with nonsensical suffixes like "-iggedy" and pop culture references that made them sound like human beatboxes channeling Saturday morning cartoons. Their follow-up "Straight Up Sewaside" (1993) and later "Hold It Down" (1995) demonstrated their ability to mature their sound while maintaining the playful wordplay that made tracks like "Dum Dums" and "Real Hip Hop" instant classics in the golden age of hip-hop. What made Das EFX truly distinctive was their ability to transform the English language into a rhythmic playground, creating a whole new vocabulary that influenced countless rappers and proved that hip-hop could be simultaneously cerebral and silly, serious and surreal. While their commercial peak was in the early '90s, their linguistic innovations and boundary-pushing approach to rap delivery helped expand the artistic possibilities of hip-hop, proving that technical skill and creative wordplay could be just as powerful as street credibility. Their cultural impact extends beyond music, as their cartoon-influenced aesthetic and verbal gymnastics helped bridge the gap between hip-hop's hardcore elements and mainstream pop culture, making rap more accessible while never dumbing it down.
