Earth emerged from Seattle in 1990 as pioneers of drone metal, with Dylan Carlson's heavily distorted, glacially-paced guitar work creating a sound so slow and heavy it practically invented its own genre. After nearly destroying themselves with heroin in the '90s, they reinvented their approach on albums like "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull," trading metal brutality for hypnotic, Western-tinged instrumentals that stretched single riffs into epic meditations. Their evolution from the crushing doom of early tracks like "Old Black" to the more recent country-influenced drones proved that extreme music could be both punishing and beautiful.
