So the Foo's debut of this song was at a USO concert at the White House. Though there may be other meanings to the song, I think it's fitting that most of the lyrics fit with what many of our wounded soldiers experience being evacuated by helicopter from a battleground. When you're lying there on the ground in pain and you think it's all over, and you're not going to make it back home, the wheels of the MEDEVAC helicopter touch the ground next to you and you know you might get a second chance. Those dusty black wheels are the best sight you could hope to see. Thank you to all in the search&rescue community for your service, "so that others may live."

probably close or related OP, but Dave Grohl had a big phobia of flying. I'm pretty sure it is him getting over having to fly, since they tour all the time.

To me, it sounds like someone in a relationship who has started an affair because maybe they were curious if they were missing something. Then realized they were happier with their previous relationship and ended the affair. This is their explanation to the person they were running around with, telling him/her their broken heart will mend. Just a thought.

I can see the point about a possible infidelity and the repercussions from that. For some reason, though, I almost feel like maybe the relationship was in trouble due to a depression on one part's side and how it affected them individually and together. And then the eventual coping/dealing with the problem.

Quite possibly it's about Ezekiel's vision of the chariot of God in Ezekiel chapters 1 and 10 in the Bible. God's throne is on it and there is an emphasis on the four wheels touching the ground. If you look at the words closely in the song it talks about death, sinking, going down, and just when you think it's over there is another round. He looks into the sky (where God is). He wants something better than this life, something new, something beautiful. He wishes to (not for) something true. The Bible destribes God's word as truth. He says broken hearts will mend. He says this is our beginning (our phyiscal life) coming to an end. He says there's another round when the wheels come down.
