Do you know what's worth fighting for
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?

Does the pain weigh out the pride
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
EVERYBODY!
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you've lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul

Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
EVERYBODY!
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone?

EVERYBODY!
1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
EVERYDODY! YEAH!
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I
ARE U NEW YORK?

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

1, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
1, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky
You and I
NEW YORK!

About This Song

"21 Guns" is a deeply introspective ballad that explores the moment when someone realizes they must surrender in life's battles, whether personal, political, or emotional. The song uses the military metaphor of laying down arms-with "21 guns" referencing the traditional military salute for fallen soldiers-to examine themes of defeat, exhaustion, and the wisdom that sometimes comes with giving up fights that can't be won. Lyrically, it delves into the psychological toll of prolonged struggle, questioning what's truly worth fighting for when the cost becomes unbearable, and exploring the shame and vulnerability that comes with admitting defeat. The track represents a departure from Green Day's typical punk aggression, featuring a more mature, arena-rock sound with sweeping guitars, orchestral elements, and Billie Joe Armstrong's most vulnerable vocal performance to date. Musically, it builds from intimate verses to an anthemic, cathartic chorus that transforms surrender from weakness into liberation. The song resonated powerfully with listeners during the late 2000s economic crisis and ongoing wars, offering both personal solace for individual struggles and broader commentary on America's political fatigue. Its universal message about knowing when to stop fighting-whether against addiction, toxic relationships, or impossible circumstances-struck a chord with audiences seeking permission to let go. The track became one of Green Day's biggest mainstream hits, proving that even a punk band's fans were ready for songs about strategic retreat rather than endless rebellion.

The "One, 21 Guns" is referring to the one twenty-one gun "Salute" soldiers of an honor guard deliver to the fallen soldiers of war. It's quite heart-wrenching to hear this song although I love it. It means (Well, to me anyway) a lot, especially after losing so many friends and family to this war in the military, and being a Marine myself, it's nice to have a group like Green Day (my fave band since I was about 4) devote a song like this to the soldiers and such during a time such as this... Thank you, Green Day.

This song means so much to me. In twelve months my unit is deploying to Afghanistan. I'm worried, nervous, and a bit scared, but I signed up for this and I'm going to go through with it. Knowing there are people out there, such as Green Day, that support us in our fight to protect really helps. And I thank all who have come before me to fight.

This song is for alcoholics, about coming to terms with the devastation that it causes. It's a call to recognize that your beat by the disease and it's time to stop denying that fact and begin a new life; to rise from the ashes of ruins.

whoever don't like this song is sooo mean greenday had to work hard to write songs i higly doubt that you can make songs!! so don't judge about what it means just listen and appreciate music!!! and don't be so judgemental they did what they did and thats it so deal with it!! like we have to deal with your sorry asss!!!!

Wow, people can be dense. The song has a dual meaning. It's anti-war, flat out. Whether that war is fought by soldiers in another country or your own personal war. If you REALLY read the words... it's giving up on a lost cause. Like the sorry relationship you can't fix no matter how many times you bang your head against a wall.

i think what greenday is trying to say is war (military war)is meaningless. its brutal and it had sacrifice lots of innocent people. at some point this song wud make sense to any soldier who questioning their purpose being on the battlefield n feel sick of what they're doing there. its ruining their lives and doesnt worth the 21 gun salutes.

As a marine who served 3 tours in Iraq, this song pisses me off. Green day is a very talented band but they come off as an anti military/anti establishment group, which is absolutely their right but I take pride in serving my country and will continue to defend those rights.

I DONT KNOW WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS SONG...BUT I KNOW THIS IS FOR ALL PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY!!! ALL I WANT TO SAY IS " I LIKE IT SO MUCH..MUUUAAHHH!!!

I like Green Day a lot and while there is no doubt a group of guys from Berkley, such as they are, would be anything but anti-war protestors but I want any soldier that reads this to know I support them and appreciate all they do for the protections they provide me and my family. God bless you and keep you safe. Without you bands like Green Day would not have the freedom to sing about whatever comes to their heart on stage.

THIS SONG ROCKS!!!!I luv this song so much i wish i new this song when i was having some bad times

It is antiwar...the writer has openly said so and expounded on it for months. It is not a tribute to soldiers, alcoholics, relationship struggles, etc. It's more or less another middle finger to the Bush Administration. I like the sound of the song, and I'm always curious at how people decide to interpret the lyrics. I do support our military, however, and I'm afraid that a catchy song from some Berkley dropouts isn't going to make me rethink my stance there. Stop taking yourself so seriously, Billy Jack.

I can't say I know what this song meant to Greenday, but we have burried many Soldiers here in Afghanistan with this song playing at their memorial. To us, the Soldiers here dying, it is beautiful and is a tribute to our commrades.
