Katy Perry – Firework Lyrics

Pop

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you?
'Cause there's a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
You're gonna leave them all in awe, awe, awe

You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time, you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
You're gonna leave them all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, "Awe, awe, awe"
You're gonna leave them all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

About This Song

"Firework" is a soaring anthem of self-empowerment that transforms feelings of worthlessness and invisibility into explosive self-acceptance and inner strength. The song addresses those profound moments of despair when people feel discarded, fragile, and unheard-captured through vivid metaphors like drifting plastic bags and paper-thin houses of cards that perfectly encapsulate modern anxiety and depression. Perry's lyrics dig deeper than typical pop empowerment, acknowledging the genuine pain of feeling "buried deep" and screaming without being heard, validating listeners' darkest emotional states before offering hope. The central firework metaphor is brilliantly chosen because fireworks are inherently temporary yet spectacular-suggesting that our moments of brilliance don't need to be permanent to be meaningful and transformative. Musically, the track builds from intimate verses with sparse instrumentation to an absolutely explosive chorus featuring thunderous drums, soaring strings, and Perry's powerful vocal delivery that literally embodies the firework bursting. The production mirrors the emotional journey, starting small and vulnerable before erupting into pure sonic celebration. The song resonated massively because it arrived during a cultural moment when many felt powerless and overlooked, offering a perfect balance of acknowledging real pain while providing an accessible, anthemic call to self-worth. Its success stemmed from Perry's ability to craft a genuinely uplifting message without dismissing the legitimate struggles that make empowerment necessary in the first place.

SHE is a good role model now? What is our society coming to? Blame our public schools. Why are we paying our hard earned cash into buildings where we are wasting away, being told that Katy Perry is a person to idealize. I'm homeschooled and I think that school is a waste of time. I am 12 years old and while most people my age are thinking about how hot that moron Justin Beiber is, I am in college. Take THAT pop culture!

To: Take THAT pop cultureYou're 12 years old? When I was 12 years old, I worshiped pop music and artists like Katy Perry and loved BOYS like Justin Bieber. You need to learn how to dance around in your underwear and sing into a hairbrush, just because it's fun.Being smart is awesome but it's also not everything; you need to make time in your life to have fun too.

I also would like to respond to the "Take THAT pop culture!" comment:I love Katy Perry! She has already said she's not role model material, but I always feel inspired by her lyrics and her courage to be herself. That's good enough for me. "What is our society coming to"? Rather funny coming out of a 12 year old. You are too young to know how society was like in the past, much less fully grasp how society is like now. It's also funny that a home-schooled kid is talking about what they teach in public school. From my experience, public school never had a pop culture brainwashing class. I've never heard a teacher tell us who to idolize, whether it be Miley Cyrus or George Washington. If you want someone to blame for pop culture brainwash, blame the media. Or even friends, for they introduce artists to their own friends to become fanatic over. If you feel immune to pop culture, it's only because you are so sheltered, and for that, I feel sorry for you. Your feelings of superiority over your peers simply because you do not go with the flow, your hatred for a young artist simply because he is popular; this reflects your ignorance of the world. You have a lot to learn, and I hope that by the time you get to college you will outgrow these feelings, be more open-minded, and be able to learn and function in a larger, more public and social environment than your own home. I love a lot of popular music and artists. That doesn't affect my ability to learn or understand. If anything, it makes me a more cultured person. And I made it to college just fine. Take THAT.
