LaBelle was a pioneering Philadelphia soul group active from 1970-1976 who revolutionized R&B with their flamboyant style, soaring vocals, and genre-blending sound that mixed funk, rock, and disco. Led by Patti LaBelle's powerhouse voice alongside Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, they achieved massive success with "Lady Marmalade" from their 1974 album "Nightbirds," a sultry, French-tinged anthem that topped the charts and became a feminist empowerment classic. Their theatrical glam-rock aesthetic, complete with feathers, sequins, and space-age costumes, challenged conventional R&B presentation and influenced countless artists from Prince to Beyoncé. Though they disbanded in 1976, LaBelle's fearless artistry and Patti's subsequent solo career established them as icons who proved Black women could be both commercially successful and creatively uncompromising.
