Lady Gaga – So Happy I Could Die Lyrics

Pop

Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha

I love that lavender blonde
The way she moves, the way she walks
I touch myself, can't get enough
And in the silence of the night
Through all the tears and all the lies
I touch myself and it's alright

Just give in
Don't give up, baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me
Just (just) know when (know when)
That glass is empty that the world is gonna bend, yeah

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die and it's alright

Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha

I am as vain as I allow
I do my hair, I gloss my eyes
I touch myself all through the night
And when something falls out of place (place)
I take my time, I put it back
I touch myself 'til I'm on track

Just give in
Don't give up, baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me
Just (just) know when (know when)
That glass is empty that the world is gonna bend, yeah

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die and it's alright

So happy I could die and it's alright
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
So happy I could die and it's alright

Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ye-ha, ye-ha
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
Ah-ha, ah-ha

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die and it's alright

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Ayy-ayy, ayy-ayy
So happy I could die and it's alright

About This Song

"So Happy I Could Die" is a hypnotic exploration of self-pleasure, loneliness, and the blissful escape found in solitary intimacy. The song delves into themes of sexual autonomy and self-discovery, with Gaga celebrating masturbation not just as a physical act but as a form of emotional release and self-empowerment. Beneath its euphoric surface lies a deeper meditation on isolation and the ways we cope with emptiness-the "silence of the night" and "tears and lies" suggest someone finding solace in their own touch when human connection feels elusive or painful. The track's dreamy, ethereal production features shimmering synths and a pulsing electronic beat that mirrors the building intensity of physical pleasure, while Gaga's breathy, almost whispered vocals create an intimate atmosphere that feels both vulnerable and defiant. The juxtaposition of ecstasy and melancholy-being "so happy I could die"-captures the bittersweet nature of finding profound joy in solitude. The song resonated with listeners because it openly celebrated female sexuality and self-sufficiency in a way that was both liberating and relatable, particularly for those who found comfort in their own company during moments of emotional turbulence. Its frank discussion of masturbation was groundbreaking in mainstream pop, helping normalize conversations about female pleasure and autonomy.

...for the most part i think thats right but by lavender blonde i think she's refering to herself.

I think thats true but it's also about that making her feel bad so she just burys the problems by drinking and when shes drunk she thinks shes happy but deep down she wants to die? :S

It sounds to me like a song about her sexuality. Lavender blonde could be another woman who she fancies; she's happy around her and is her best friend but feels like she can't move it to the next level because of society? So she portrays the image that she's happy, when inside she wants to die because she can't have this person.

I absolutly LOVE this song! I love the meaning and the story. It's about her having a girl-crush on her best friend...

To me, this song is talking about a girl who's in love with her best friend (the way she moves/the way she walks/i touch myself/can't get enough), but her friend doesn't realize it, so the girl creates this euphoric fantasy world of alcohol and drugs and 'touching herself' where she's with the girl and everything is beautiful and happy (be your best friend and i'll love you forever/up in the clouds feeling higher than ever/so happy i could die/and its alright), but deep down, she realizes how empty she is and how none of it is true (and when something falls out of place/i take my time/i put it back/i touch myself till i'm on track) it's a beautiful song. its very dark, but its subtle. its not your typical pop song. It's proof of GaGa's brilliance.

It's very important to have in mind that she said that every song on her album "the fame monster" is dedicated to a monster she have seen on her world tour.. so the interpretation with the fear of alcohol and drugs seems pretty good to me :D

LOL touching yourself is another slang for "touching up" yourself. Which makes sense. But I guess to anyone else it could mean masturbation. she probably knew it'd be a double meaning.

I think she is talking about how she is infatuated w herself. But it could also mean how she is secretly in love w her best friend. The lavendar blonde part confuses me. Either way, this woman is brilliant and I love everything that she has put out. Fashion shows were definitely meant for her, she is so unique and we have long awaited an artist like Stefani. We love you girl!

I think that she is referring to herslef as the lavendar blonde. She also seems to be secretly in love w her best friend. Either way, this woman is brilliant in all that she has put out. I love how she is so unique, I totally disagree w her being weird, she is UNIQUE. I think that we have long awaited an artist like Stefani. We love you, girl!!

Wikipedia says it's about masturbation. Indeed, none of the tracks on the album have anything to do with drugs.

You guys...Lady Gaga is NOT afraid of drugs and alcohol! It doesn't get any simpler than the lyrics. She is having fun in a club partying. She is in love with herself. You guys have missed the entire point if you havent figured out she's centered her first and "second" CD around FAME and everyone's collective notion of how fabulous it is. She is getting drunk in a club and having a fantastic time. DUH. HAPPY in the club with a bottle of red wine. STARS IN OUR EYES because we're having a GOOD TIME. SO HAPPY I COULD DIE.

When she mentions the lavender blonde it doesn't necessarily mean she is talking about someone else.It could be from a third person perspective meaning she's singing the words of someone else who said it to her.
  • Anonymous
Yeah she actually is afraid of alcohol and drugs. All of you wannabe GaGa fans need to think before you say and get your facts straight. In the words of Gaga herself, the song "So Happy I Could Die" is about the fear of alcohol and drugs. Your all naive.

LMAOOO!!! to the comment BELOW ME YOUR A DUMB&#039SS. if u were such a f&#039ck&#039ng lady gaga fan you would know that she used to be obsessed with cocaine and did plenty of drugs while living in NYC andd she loves alcohol so wtf are you talking about? i love lady gaga to death but seriously your just a f&#039ck&#039ng POSER. at least do your research and get your facts straight if your going to be a poser like common now.

WATCH LADY GAGA: ON THE RECORD ON FUSE YOU DUMBASSES. SHE TELLS YOU STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE THAT EVERY SONG ON HER FAME MONSTER ALBUM IS ABOUT A CERTAIN FEAR OF HERS, AND THIS ONE IS ALCOHOL. GOD.
  • Anonymous
Eh the other person was actually right. Whether it was true or not, Gaga said it herself in an interview with MTV that the meaning behind this song was her fear of addiction, alcohol, and drugs.

You guys are all dumb. I love Lady Gaga and from what I've learned about her is that she is very unique and YOU HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO READ IN BETWEEN THE LINES OF HER WORDS. She goes so much more deeper than what she is actually talking about. Just like her lyrics. THAT SHE WRITES HERSELF. Have any of you ACTUALLY have listened to her whole entire album? Not every single song is about drugs or alcohol. But she did an interview with MTV talking about how each song on her album is about a certain fear. Example, "Monster" is about her fear of a typical man. She relates to so many people about the things the rest of the singers and song writers are too scared to talk about. She goes beyond just love. And in this song, I believe she's talking about herself. Because she says "I am as vain as I allow" It has nothing to do with masterbation you IDIOTS. THINK ABOUT IT. And she's talking about how she's having a good time with herself with a bottle of red wine. hint: "so happy i could die" JUST READ BETWEEN THE LINES AND GIVE HER A CHANCE. Not every single thing is about sex drugs and alcohol. She goes way deeper than that.

wow you guys are so angry. chill out. arent you just meant to get what you get personally from songs?

well for all of u who thought the song was about masterbation ur all WRONG so yeah she says she touches herself but that is NOT masterbating u freaks!!!! any way all of u who thought it was about getting drunk UR WRONG TOOO its about her fear of alcohol and alcohol abuse...DUH and in the begining wen she describes the lavender blonde... if u were real gaga fans ud know that lady gaga is bisexual...for all u retards tht dont know what tht is its wen a person likes both sexes DUH so she could be describing a love interest... well now tht ive cleared tht up imma go and chill with my fransss byes!!!

I personally do NOT think it's about masturbation. She is far to creative to do something so shallow however songs are like poems. The listener can interpret it any way he or she feels. even if GAGA herself says its about something people will still have it mean something different for them. I personally take the song to mean she is singing to herself. Her "fame self" and her regular self. Touching herself might also mean putting her hand to her heart or "thinking" about her life or getting in touch with the she she once was before becoming famous. The fame self of course gets anything she wants ie when the glass is empty the world is gonna bend meaning people will bend over backwards for her. She tries to touch herself "through all the tears and all the lies" might mean she tries to stay in touch with reality because "fame" can sometimes make a person loose control. She may be trying to stay focused to not get caught up in hard core drugs etc etc. When she says she is so happy she could die she may be saying it sarcastically like "wow another party big deal". After all a lot of famous people get tired of partying OR when they party the have to remember they are not totally surrounded by friends but just by people that want something from her. Also she may be saying "A bottle of wine" is ALL she needs and "its alright" because people around her may be offering her other things she knows she should stay away from but all she needs is her wine and the music. Thats how I take it but like i said everyone will "hear" this song differently. Only she knows for sure what it means because she wrote it but being an artist she will leave it for each person to make their own decision on the meaning.

by touch her self she could mean to realise that shes not dreaming.not masturbating.

It's about loving yourself, both physically and emotionally. I'm pretty sure she is the lavender blonde, as she had hair like that. Love it.

i personally like the thought that its about masturbation! THANKS LADY GAGA you rock!

who cares it is a good song lady gaga is awesome or it was a rewrite song for another singer that was a boy cause she has bought lots of songs from other people so i say it is a bought song or she is talking about herself

I believe is about self-esteem, self-love and self-respect, remember when she had lavender blonde hair? Is a direct reference to herself. Maybe the 'touch' is not only in the physical self, but in the ethereal sense, you 'touch yourself' to reach to your own self, to who you really are and into accepting yourself the "crash and burn" reference to drugs someone saw, could easily be that once you stop reveling upon all of your self-love and amazement, you have to face the cold, harsh world again, and you have to be ready for it, so you let no one bring you down.Just a personal view on the song, please don't start flaming, is a bit moronic to flame over the lyrics of a song. It is open to interpretation from many points of view, so is quite silly to argue over it.In the words of Lady Gaga "love each other"

    Thisis so f&#039ck&#039ng hot.

I think that the song is about being gay, and Being in love with her straight best friend. Cause she says, " Open up your heart and your mind to me. " And she sings about touching herself to the vision of a laveder blonde.
  • Anonymous
personally i think the song is about lonleyness and being happy with what you've hot!

I can relate to all of that so much haha. Sry if it sounds creepy but I touch myself like that and I'm as vain as I allow and all of that... haha It's great that she's so relatable. And I think it's all basically about loving yourself.

It's been confirmed in a Fuse interview with her (that yes I did watch and not just hear about), that SHICD is about her fear of alcohol monster. When she sings about touching herself, is it an analogy related to drinking? It makes sense and "I touch myself" sounds better than saying "I drink". "I love that lavender blond, the way she moves, the way she walks I TOUCH MYSELF, can't get enough. And In the silence of the night, I TOUCH MYSELF, and it's alright." "I am as vain as I allow, I do my hair, I gloss my eyes, I TOUCH MYSELF all through the night. And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back, I TOUCH MYSELF 'til I'm on track." Substitute something about drinking into where she says "I touch myself", and it would make just as much sense.

Oh come on, so what if its about masturbation? Yes, she is talking about her past with alcoholism blah blah blah, but it's hard to listen to the song without putting your hands down your pants. Lady Gaga broke the silence behind the shame and discreet women won't admit to. Plus, she is proof that not just ugly girls masturbate. (= I AM A WOMAN AND I MASTURBATE.

this song is about this and exactly this: the fear of alcohol and addiction-she may love alcohol and the good feeling it gives you, but not the affects of it. and the line"i touch myself and it's alright" may mean it's something that feels good and makes everyything better; like drinking...and "that glass is empty that the world is gona bend" know when, you've drinken allyour drink, and your most likely about to pukeand a deeper meaning could be, i am an alcoholic and it's ruining my life, even though it makes me happy, i could die from it
  • Anonymous
who fears alcohol? c'mon. and why is everybody freaking out cause shes talking about touching herself... "oh my god what did she mean when she said she is touching herself..." wow dumbass. what do you think it mean... it probably mean she is fucking touching herself. surprise surprise she is talking like she always does.

who is such a creeper that they go look up the meanings of songs....retards. and.... "umm omg what does it mean touching myself...." umm what do you think it means douche...... why don't you go tell her she is a sinner and maybe she won't talk like that anymore kay sweetheart. and we wont have to sit here thinking woww... this person is a retarddddd

I do think it's about masturbating, thinking about her best friend whom she loves. It tackles the anguish and the pain of an impossible love, or what it implies to be in love with one's best friend, and deals with the feeling of completeness she has when she is with that woman. At that moment, she could die because being with her is all she wants. It says that masturbating soothes her temporarily, it makes her happy for a time.
  • Anonymous
its about alchohol, b/c she clearly said so in a interview on t.v. when you dont know what the fuck its about shut up!

In my opinion, the title "So happy I could die" Means she's in pure ecstasy. Also chourus obviously talks about drinking and love(or companionship). 1)The whole story is about her being so drunk, that she masturbates to her own beauty. 2)(Touching herself is symbolic for amazement) Throughout all her depression or self-consiousness, she drinks regain her self esteem with her friends and becomes very happy.

you know what if you dont like da song then dont listen to it. lady gaga rcks and if you hate her then you suck.

Reply to "She didnt write the song..." & "who cares it is a good song lady gaga is awesome or it was a rewrite song for another singer that was a boy cause she has bought lots of songs from other people so i say it is a bought song or she is talking about herself" Lady Gaga writes ALL her songs and lyrics. She has said that on interviews, and you can just tell. And I think she (Lady Gaga) is the lavender blonde. The song is probably all about falling in love with her image. I think that she got so drunk, or had such an overdose of some type of drug because she was depressed, that she's having these types of hallucinations of a woman, which turn out to be herself. Then she is all happy! =)
