Norah Jones – Chasing Pirates Lyrics

Jazz

In your message you said
You were going to bed
But I'm not done with the night

So I stayed up and read
But your words in my head
Got me mixed up, so I turned out the light

And I don't know how
To slow it down
My mind's racing
From chasing pirates

Well, I'm having the squeems
While the silliest thing's
Floppin' around in my brain

And I try not to dream
But them possible schemes
Swim around, wanna drown me in sync

And I don't know how
To slow it down
Oh, my mind's racing
From chasing pirates

And I don't know how
To slow it down
Oh, my mind's racing
From chasing pirates

My mind's racing
From chasing pirates
My mind's racing
From chasing pirates

About This Song

"Chasing Pirates" explores the restless anxiety of overthinking and sleepless nights through Norah Jones' signature intimate vocal style. The song uses the metaphor of "chasing pirates" to represent racing thoughts and mental preoccupation, likely stemming from relationship uncertainty or communication gaps. Jones delivers the introspective lyrics over a gentle, jazz-influenced arrangement that contrasts with the mental turbulence described. The track showcases her ability to transform personal vulnerability into universally relatable emotional landscapes.

Pirates steal treasure and she is in love with the man who is her treasure and who said he is going to bed - so in her mind a part of her is wondering if he is with another woman and she is chasing this dark shadowy thought out of her mind.

it is about peter pan and captain hook,it is a swirling fantasy not to be taken literaaly, especially in the light of the music which is fairground in nature and uses organ to great effect

In your message you said you were going to bed,But I'm not done with the night......This is someone who she really admires and has a crush on and would like to tell him this or wished he'd said I like to see you tonight, but she's too shy to tell him this. This is a longing for someone love song...someone she thinks is maybe too cool of a guy for her. A pirate, an adventurer, an individualist, a rebel. He says things to her that are flirty sometimes but not enough to really know for sure if he's interested.....So I stayed up and read, but your words in my head got,Me mixed up so I turned out the light. And I don’t know how to slow it down.My mind’s racing from chasing pirates. Now I’m having the squeams, while the silliest thingsAre flapping around in my brain. And I try not to dream of the impossible schemes,That swim around wanna drown me in synch. This describes the feelings of euphoria and confusion when you've got a powerful crush on someone, trying to make a way for the connection and love to materialize. She wants to show him that's she's an adventurer too. Someone who's willing to lose sight of the shore and sail to distant lands seeking joy and adventure from life. She's in love with him because he isn't bound to convention and goes for it in his own life. She's in love with the IDEAL of how he lives his life and wishes she could do the same.
