The Sound of Madness album cover

Shinedown – Second Chance Lyrics

Rock

My eyes are open wide
By the way, I made it through the day
I watch the world outside
By the way, I'm leaving out today

I just saw Halley's Comet, she waved
Said why you always running in place
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Please don't cry one tear for me
I'm not afraid of what I have to say
This is my one and only voice
So listen close, it's only for today

I just saw Halley's Comet, she waved
Said why you always running in place
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Here is my chance
This is my chance

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

I love it too, but I don't think its about suicide. I think its about a drastic change in life, like one that could either turn out really bad or really good. Take that leap of faith.

If it is not about suicide why is this line in it: I am leaving out today

I think it's about suicide too. It reminds me of someone I recently lost and it sounds all to familure in their departure.

are ya retarded this sound is about sometimes you have to leave your life behind to start a new one.. this song has nothing to do with killin.. watch the video smarts

This song is not about suicide. It is about leaving the same place you have been for years. That is why it says Why you always running in place. Either that or it is about taking chances that could have messed you up but some times goodbye is a second chance.

I love this song(my favorite song!!!) and its not a suicide song. My eyes are open wide: I just realised what my life is. SOMETIMES GOODBYE IS A SECOND CHANCE: if you change your path in life its a 2nd chance. Suicde=death and heck, not another chance. --Co-author of Wacked Poems--

it seems as if this is saying that taking chances could go wrong or turn out good, all i know is that this has changed my life and the mistakes that i have made...

this song can be about whatever you see it as. maybe the writer meant to write it as a suicide song, maybe a divorce or life changing song. a songs meaning is just whatever you perceive it as. it's not a set in stone thing. it's changeable, debatable, it's basically whatever you see it as. songs and music in general make people feel different ways. so a song meaning isn't just what one person says, it's whatever you see it as, whatever it means to you. so if you see it as a suicide song, then so be it. maybe, to you, it is.

I love this song!! Its not about suicide, its about exactly what the video portrays! Sometimes you have to leave where you are to get to where you want. Even if you're saying goodbye you're starting a new life for yourself!

Are you crazy? This song is the opposite of suicide! It's about out with the old and in with the new. about moving away and starting a new life. Like when a person moves away from thier parents or something like that. NOT SUICIDE!!! :-)

i like the song but i think it is about suicide. passing the moon and haley's comet. free from the things of life that weighed them down. telling the ones you love that you really tried but felt goodbye (death) is a 2nd chance (reincarnation, heaven). that your not angry...trying to relieve them of the guilt of your suicide...just my interpertation...i still like the song though

The song isn't about suicide. It's not about anything. Probably some of the most idiotic lyrics ever writtin. But the song is catchy as hell. I'll give it that.

This in my favorite song! If you think it is about sucide then you are insane! The line 'im leaving out today' means that today is the day you life is going to start changing and you are going to leave your old life behind you. duh. :D

in the late 80's or early 90's a few people killed themselves they were in a cult and they were told there was a spaceship behind a commit to take them to another place the lyrics in this song is very similar to a note left by one of the cult members

i think the song is about a person who has realized they are living a lie....and are finally doing something about it. i have a male friend..or had a male friend who recently began the process of becoming a woman...the song is about being true to yourself...its NEVER too late

I really enjoy this song. Reading the comments of others it seems that there are two different opinions as to what exactlly it means. I personally feel that it speaks of new beginings and casting aside all that lay in the past and relaxing. Not 'jogging in place' or dwelling on the past, and moving forward, as stated before, a new begining. Some thinks that the song is about suicide and others do not, but really it's left to the listener to decide. It could be, it could not be...A new begining. -Alshmee

I think about our daughter (18 yrs old). She has been trying to do things our way (private school, college, etc..) and she is tired of trying. She's done the best she can, but now she needs to go out on her own...to say goodbye to us - in order to get her second chance at life and do it her way.

This song for me is about being true to yourself and sometimes having to say goodbye to your family and there expectations of who they want you to be.

i think this song is about the light going on in a young mans head to who and what he wants to be. His dreams differ from those of his parents but he needs to move forward and is hoping their relationship will also. I think of my own son who has made the decision to join the military after all the iscussions and fears on our parts. Maybe it has helped me as a mom to let go of the boy he was and start new with the man he has become.

I could be wrong, but as I see it, the only way this song could be interpereted as being about suicide is if the listener is just a very morbid individual. Like I said, I could be missing the point (but I doubt it!)

This song is my fav out of all my favs really hit home for me. I was a troubled teen my family was abusive, I went to drugs as a way out. then go clean but ended back up in the clutches of the abusive family finally I had to say enough is enough and leave all of them just me and my kids. This song makes me see all that i have went through and what I have overcome I really have had a second chance in life. But I was the one that had to make that happen just like the song says.

This song is about Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen who have liberal parents that did not want their child joining the military. The child joined and learned his parents are idiots and should convert to Republican-ism immediately. This is the type of song that will motivate a "patriot" to go out and fight those not wanting to take our Freedom.

If Shinedown would decide to bath in gasoline and then commence smoking cigarettes, I think I would be a HUGE fan. Although, I would still need some way to erase them from history, so never would I have to hear a single song from them again. I guess if you must say one positive thing about them.... at least they managed to bring all you deadbeat trashy losers together. I mean come on: Ahhh my son is in jail, ahhhhhhh... GREAT PARENTING! AHHH my son is a war hero.... REALLY you think Shinedown is referring to soldiers? No wonder your child joined the army instead of taking over the family firm.... And what I am most fascinated about, they have internet in trailer parks now?!?!

To the moron who made the gasoline comment: grow up and get your head out of your ass. Stop talking nonsense and get a damn life. That being said, I heard in an interview with shinedown's Brent Beasley, what the meaning was behind the song. His parents wanted him to give up the "fantasy" of making it as a rock and roll star and do the college thing. He decided to make a try at following his dream dispite their objections and left...under very tense circumstances. The song was to say that he wasn't angry with them about it and he knew they cared. But in the end, it was his life and right or wrong, he needed to live it his way and try his best. I'd say that his millions of dollars speak well of his decision and I believe his parents are proud of him...and probably would be no matter what.
