About This Song

"Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites" is a groundbreaking dubstep anthem that explores themes of vulnerability, social anxiety, and the masks people wear to hide their insecurities. The song's fragmented lyrics reveal a narrator encouraging someone to drop their defensive facade, acknowledging shared cowardice and emotional fragility with the confession "I'm a coward too." This message of mutual vulnerability is delivered through Skrillex's revolutionary production style, which became the blueprint for mainstream dubstep with its aggressive bass drops, glitchy vocal chops, and chaotic electronic textures that mirror the internal turmoil of social interaction. The track's genius lies in how it uses jarring sonic violence-piercing synths, earth-shaking wobbles, and abrupt dynamic shifts-to externalize the overwhelming sensations of anxiety and emotional exposure. The juxtaposition between the gentle, almost childlike vocal samples and the brutal electronic assault creates a sonic representation of how intimidating genuine human connection can feel. The song resonated with a generation raised on digital communication, speaking to the paradox of feeling simultaneously connected and isolated in an increasingly electronic world. Its success launched dubstep into mainstream consciousness while establishing Skrillex as the genre's most influential figure, proving that extreme electronic music could carry genuine emotional weight. The track became an anthem for misfits and introverts, validating their struggles while providing a cathartic release through its explosive sonic chaos.

I agree with Crystal Drop. I think Sonny can totally relate to this song too because of his past career in a band he clearly wasn't happy with when he left at 19. He then totally changed scene and this song goes to show you don't have to follow the crowd, if you want to make things happen, you can do it alone.

Ok, so I got stoned with a few friends last night and while listening to the song, this is what hit us in the face:You are the listener, you're transported into the world of good and evil (the same one we're living in right now), the world of scary monsters and nice sprites. The whole song is basically a battle between the scary monster (being the heavy bass drops) and the nice sprite (being the soulful melodies). On every rhythmic breakdown the nice sprite is defeating the scary monster, while during the wobbly drops, the monster gains back advantage.Because the song ends with that soulful melody, the nice sprite has defeated the scary monster. Good has defeated evil.So yeah :D It was really cool discovering it though, because it turned out we were all thinking the exact same thing!

Listen to this song and imagine a forest inhabited by flying blue sprites and large, earth-bound monsters. The sprites are happy until the monsters come by, when they start fleeing in terror from them. In the end though, the monster melts and inside is a glowing golden sprite that speaks with the blue sprites... It fits pretty dang well.
