I think he is singing about having an affair. I think he used to have them before whether it was with the same woman or a few others and before he never felt any shame in it. The woman in this song is trying to the right thing by saying goodbye but he continues to try to keep her around by saying its alright and deep down inside he actually likes her and feels hurt by it now he isn't so "invincible" like he was in the past.
