About Taco
Taco is a Dutch-Indonesian entertainer born in Jakarta who became an international novelty sensation in the 1980s with his flamboyant, theatrical interpretations of American pop standards. His breakthrough hit "Putting On The Ritz" (1982) transformed Irving Berlin's classic into a campy, new wave spectacle complete with top hat, tails, and exaggerated choreography that became a MTV staple. Drawing from vaudeville, cabaret, and early Hollywood musicals, Taco's over-the-top performances of songs like "Singin' In The Rain" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" created a unique niche blending nostalgia with 1980s pop sensibilities. While often dismissed as a novelty act, his theatrical approach and gender-bending aesthetic influenced later performance artists and helped bridge the gap between classic American songbook traditions and contemporary pop culture.
