The Script – Breakeven Lyrics

Rock

I'm still alive, but I'm barely breathing
Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in
'Cause I got time while she got freedom
'Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even, no

Her best days will be some of my worst, yeah
She finally met a man that's gonna put her first
While I'm wide awake, she's no trouble sleeping, no
'Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even, even, no

What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you?
And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up and you're okay?
And I'm falling to pieces, yeah
I'm falling to pieces

They say bad things happen for a reason, yeah
But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding, oh
'Cause she's moved on while I'm still grieving
And when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even, even, no

What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you?
And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up and you're okay?
I'm falling to pieces
I'm falling to pieces
I'm falling to pieces (one still in love while the other one's leaving), yeah
('Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even) oh, oh
Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah

Oh, you got his heart and my heart and none of the pain
You took the suitcase, I took the blame
Now I'm tryna make sense of what little remains, whoa
'Cause you left me with no love, with no love to my name

I'm still alive, but I'm barely breathing
C'mon, sing it to me
(Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in)
('Cause I got time while she got freedom) that's beautiful
'Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even, even, no

What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you?
And what am I supposed to say when I'm all choked up and you're okay?
I'm falling to pieces
I'm falling to pieces
I'm falling to pieces (one still in love while the other one's leaving), oh
('Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even)

Oh, it don't break even, no, no
It don't break even, no
Oh, it don't break even, no
It don't break even, no
Oh, it don't break even, no

This don't break even, no
It don't break even, no
It don't break even, no
It don't break even, no, yeah

About This Song

"Breakeven" is a deeply vulnerable exploration of the asymmetrical nature of heartbreak, where one person moves on while the other remains devastated. The song captures the torturous realization that while the narrator is barely surviving the breakup, his ex-partner has found happiness with someone new who will treat her better than he did. At its core, the track examines the guilt and self-awareness that comes with recognizing your own role in a relationship's failure, even as you're drowning in the aftermath. The central metaphor of hearts not "breaking even" illustrates how breakups are rarely mutual-one person typically suffers far more than the other, creating an emotional imbalance that feels fundamentally unfair. Musically, The Script crafts a piano-driven ballad that builds from intimate verses to soaring, anthemic choruses, with Danny O'Donoghue's raw, emotionally charged vocals carrying the weight of genuine anguish. The production combines rock sensibilities with pop accessibility, featuring driving drums and guitar that amplify the emotional intensity without overwhelming the song's vulnerable core. The track resonated powerfully with listeners because it articulates a universal truth about love and loss that many had felt but couldn't express-the devastating inequality of heartbreak and the complex mix of regret, jealousy, and genuine care for someone you've lost. Its honest portrayal of masculine emotional vulnerability, combined with its soaring melody, made it both a cathartic release and a radio-friendly hit that established The Script as masters of emotionally intelligent rock.

about that praying to a god you don't believe in thing, putting spelling aside cause that gets us nowhere, people will take offense to just about anything but that doesn't take away from the importance of saying it.That line is quite significant, it's saying that he's praying to a god, without getting into a specific religion, to get him through the situation he's in, or quite likely to get this girl back, but he's having a crisis of faith since this god is one who let this happen in the first place. It's pretty powerful actually that's how important this girl was to him that losing her makes him doubt his faith, and equally powerful that he's still praying despite that crisis of faith.

This is a beautiful song that has so much meaning to anyone that has been in a relationship where they truly love the other person and it doesn't work. There are times you doubt yourself, God, your friends, everyone because of the pain a broken heart leaves you with. It is never offensive to say how you feel. Feelings are real and if someone takes offense then they are not a very caring person.

I'm a rhythm and blues music lover, but one day I had to use my daughter's car and she listens to a different station of her generation. This song happened to play and I actually fell in love with it. As to its message, I wholeheartedly agree with the Comment posted June 15, 2010. And to the April 26, 2010 comment, the correct spelling is "don't" NOT "dob't"......we all make mistakes
