About Velvet Underground
Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 who pioneered avant-garde rock with their raw, experimental sound that blended art rock, drone, and proto-punk elements. Led by Lou Reed's deadpan vocals and John Cale's innovative use of viola and electronics, they created groundbreaking albums like "The Velvet Underground & Nico" (1967) and "White Light/White Heat" (1968) featuring transgressive songs like "Heroin" and "Venus in Furs" that explored taboo subjects with unflinching honesty. Though commercially unsuccessful during their brief 1965-1973 run, their influence on alternative and indie rock proved immeasurable, with producer Brian Eno famously noting that while few people bought their albums, everyone who did started a band. Their stark, minimalist approach and willingness to embrace noise and dissonance laid the foundation for punk, post-punk, and countless underground movements that followed.
