Yeasayer – Henrietta Lyrics

Rock

We will bury the night
And the tremors come on
But as you would survive, just like nobody thought
Nails turn red, lying cold on the bed
And now it turns out, this is not the end

You on the phone, we shall be renonwned teeth
For magnificent drum, ... feet
You're making them rich, they throw you away
Immaculate scum, he's here to stay

Alienation makes you weak, a dark ... ... the speech
The walls now ... ... ..., ... ... ... ... ...

Oh Henrietta,
We can live on forever
Oh Henrietta
We can live on forever

This song is about Henrietta Lacks, a poor black woman whose cancer cells became the first line of immortal human cells. She died in 1951. When she was being treated for cervical cancer, the doctors at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples without her consent. Though her cells have been responsible for many important discoveries, her family has never seen a dime. I think some of the lyrics listed are incorrect. Many of them are insanely difficult to make out, but here's what I can make out for the first stanza: ??? and the tremors come onBut she would survive, just like nobody thoughtNails turning red, lying cold on the bedAnd now it's no doubt (?), death's not the end For reference, Henrietta's nails were always painted red and when her family came to claim her body, they realized how sick she must have been to let her nails get chipped, so they painted them before the funeral.
