Yeasayer – O.N.E. Lyrics

Rock

One's not enough
I won't stop 'til I've given you up
Here, right as I am, it's hard having fun
It's much easier said than it's done

Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

No, you don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't have you anymore

But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't take it anymore, oh

The room's still now when I'm lying
'Cause the well of the night has gone dry
When they ask to behave I paid them no mind
Now I doubt if I'd have been so kind

Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

No, you don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't have you anymore

But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't take it anymore, oh

Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to

Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

No, you don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't have you anymore

But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'Cause I can't take it anymore
But I thought you should know

It feels like being tranquilized
I know the separation kills us so
But I won't stop falling like raindrops
Because I like it when you lose control

But I thought you should know
(It feels like being tranquilized)
You don't move me anymore
(I know the separation kills us so)

I'm glad that you don't
(But I won't stop falling like raindrops)
'Cause I can't take it anymore
(Because I like it when you lose control)

But I thought you should know
(It feels like being tranquilized)
You don't move me anymore
(I know the separation kills us so)

I'm glad that you don't
(But I won't stop falling like raindrops)
'Cause I can't take it anymore
(Because I like it when you lose control)

But I thought you should know
(It feels like being tranquilized)
You don't move me anymore
(I know the separation kills us so)

About This Song

"O.N.E." is a haunting exploration of emotional numbness and the paradoxical relief that comes with the end of a toxic relationship. The song captures the complex psychology of someone who has finally broken free from an unhealthy dynamic, expressing both gratitude for no longer feeling manipulated ("I'm glad that you don't move me anymore") and a lingering sense of loss. Yeasayer crafts this narrative around themes of control, dependency, and the difficult process of emotional detachment, where the protagonist recognizes that their former partner's power over them was ultimately destructive. Musically, the track exemplifies the band's signature blend of psychedelic pop and experimental rock, featuring layered harmonies, ethereal synths, and a hypnotic rhythm that mirrors the cyclical nature of unhealthy relationships. The production creates an otherworldly atmosphere that feels both dreamy and unsettling, perfectly complementing the song's exploration of emotional disconnection. The repetitive structure and mantra-like vocals reinforce the obsessive quality of trying to convince oneself that liberation feels good, even when it's painful. "O.N.E." resonated with listeners because it articulated the strange mixture of relief and emptiness that follows the end of an intense but damaging connection, capturing a universal experience of relationship aftermath that few songs address so honestly. The track stands as one of Yeasayer's most emotionally direct compositions, stripping away some of their usual sonic complexity to focus on raw psychological truth.

It sounds like it's about giving up drugs, to me...He desperately wants to be taken over by that feeling again, but at the same time he wants to remain sober because he knows he's better off that way. "It's hard having fun", "It feels like being tranquilized", "I can't have you anymore", "One's not enough", "The room's still now when I'm lying, cause the well of the night has gone dry", etc. That's just how I interpret it, anyway. It's my favourite song on the album, I love it so much.

ONE is the first step and its never enough to admit you have a problem. Recovery begins with integrating sobriety into your everyday life, its hard to have fun with clear eyes. At least the room stops spinning when the well runs dry.

it's about battling alcoholism. I used it to move on from a person, but to each their own.

Yes it is about the battle with alcoholism. The parts "hold me like you used to" and "the separation kills us so", are like the alcohol talking to the recovering alcoholic. The other parts are the person in conflict with them-self.'Come on, you aren't having fun just one drink'Excellent song
