I was brought up to believe
The universe has a plan
We are only human
It's not ours to understand

The universe has a plan
All is for the best
Some will be rewarded
And the devil will take the rest

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death

In a world of cut and thrust
I was always taught to trust
In a world where all must fail
Heaven's justice will prevail

The joy and pain that we receive
Each comes with its own cost
The price of what we're winning
Is the same as what we've lost

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death

Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe

Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to
Loves us all to death

No one turns a phrase like Mr. Peart, who knows from his own life's expierences that doing well in life will not keep bad times or 'The Reaper' away, no matter what type of religous or superstitious-based mantra anyone has been "Brought Up" on. This will be a great new song LIVE!

    You think I'm a fan?

I wish I could talk to peart about this subject, because I want to evaluate his motives for writing these lyrics. I wonder if he believes in God or if hes not sure about God.. or if he has turned out to think God is a hoax.

Obviously, he has a problem with Christianity. "Blind men in the market, buying what we're sold", can't be farther from the truth. I came to faith not by being blind, or by some book, or by just a person telling me it was the right thing to do. Faith came by a much harder road. I wish he could see that and know that faith is about more than just being led blindly off a cliff. It's about trust, and letting go of my fears, and many other things that lead to peace and freedom.

I love you Neil, but I think you got it wrong on this one.

@ Derek : Neil is for the most part justifiably alienated from the concept of faith and religion , not only because of his own personal tragedies , but from his measured observation of the world we live in . He has travelled the world and is always absorbing as much as he can in every country , trying to get a sense for each culture he visits . All of these travels have led him to conclude that Faith and Religion have been usurped by those in positions of influence to subjugate the masses and motivate them to extremes of good and evil ( see his lyric for " Armor and Sword " from the album Snakes and Arrows ) . His belief is that Humans all have within them the capacity to discern between right and wrong , and that we don't need religious leaders to explain the difference ( see also from Snakes and Arrows the lyric " Faithless " ) .

Until the Album is realeased, I don't think we'll really understand it. It appears Clockwork Angels will be a concept Album like a steampunk version of 2112. Maybe an Atlas Shrugged theme? Anyway, for those that are arguing that Neil has gone too far or that he is getting it wrong, what about Witch Hunt, Roll the Bones, Ghost of a Chance, Freewill, ... I could go on here for a while, but the point is made. Do I think Neil is an atheist? I have no idea!! I don't care. I'm not, but that doesn't mean that I should accept groupthink about what I should believe or not. Deep inside your heart is what you believe, and whatever it is, follow it and don't let anyone else tell you what it is, not the Clockmaker, the Priests of Syrinx, no anyone! The amazing intuitive mind you have already knows what is best for you, and you should learn to hear it, then listen to it, then be it. All is for the best! ;)
