The xx – Night Time Lyrics

The xx · xx
Rock

You mean that much to me and it's hard to show
Gets hectic inside of me when you go
Can I confess these things to you, well, I don't know
Embedded in my chest and it hurts to hold

I couldn't spill my heart, my eyes gleam looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather, hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip, should release but just tighten my grip

Night time sympathize, I've been working on white lies
So I'll tell the truth, I'll give it up to you
And when the day comes it will have all been fun, we'll talk about it soon

And I couldn't spill my heart, my eyes gleam looking in from the dark
And I walk out in stormy weather, hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip, should release but just tighten my grip

Night time sympathize, I've been working on white lies
So I'll tell the truth, I'll give it up to you
And when the day comes it will have all been fun, we'll talk about it soon

About This Song

"Night Time" is a haunting meditation on emotional vulnerability and the fear of exposing one's deepest feelings to someone who holds immense power over your heart. The song captures the excruciating tension between desperate love and paralyzing self-protection, where the narrator is torn between confessing their overwhelming emotions and retreating into silence to avoid potential rejection or loss. The lyrics reveal someone who feels physically burdened by unexpressed love-emotions literally "embedded in my chest" that "hurt to hold"-yet remains frozen by uncertainty about whether such intimate confessions are safe or welcome. The xx's signature minimalist production amplifies this emotional claustrophobia through sparse, echoing guitars and whispered vocals that create an atmosphere of nocturnal isolation and introspection. The interplay between Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim's voices suggests the internal dialogue of someone wrestling with their own heart, while the stripped-down instrumentation forces listeners to confront the raw emotional weight of each word. The song's title itself evokes the darkness where such vulnerable thoughts emerge-those late hours when defenses are down and true feelings surface. This delicate balance between intimacy and distance, combined with the band's innovative use of space and silence, helped establish The xx as masters of emotional minimalism. "Night Time" resonated deeply with listeners who recognized their own struggles with emotional expression and the universal fear of loving someone more than they might love you back.

I think this song is about those times when everything's going right and then it doesn't...and you know it's gonna be fine after a while but you want it fine now even though it won't be that way. I think, that way, it's about longing but resignation to the fact of inevitability. It helps me when I have addiction cravings.thank you xx!

It is about being around someone who you long to be intimate with, but can't tell them. Every second with them is precious, and when they are gone you hurt. It's boiling in her, but she can't say it. But in the end of the song she decides she will tell him....The tone of the music fits the lyrics beautifully...she is longing in the begining, and in the end, decided and happy.

I see it as love, strong love, so strong that you are to scared to talk, to tell the other person about it for fear of losing it. When the day comes to express yourself, whether or not you do get the person you love, the chase is over. However, that moment will come in its own time, there is no rush.
