Chris Brown's Defamation Suit Against Documentary Subject Moves Forward

Chris Brown's legal battle over the Investigation Discovery documentary continues to escalate. While a Los Angeles judge dismissed his defamation claims against the film's producers in January, the same court has ruled that his lawsuit against an interview subject can proceed to trial.

The R&B singer filed a $500 million defamation suit last year challenging the documentary "Chris Brown: A History of Violence," which detailed multiple domestic and sexual abuse allegations. The producers won dismissal on the grounds that they adhered to journalistic standards and presented balanced reporting.

But Brown's case against Chantel Daisia Frank—who appeared in the film to discuss an alleged 2020 rape on a yacht connected to Sean "Diddy" Combs—survived the initial legal challenge. Frank's legal team had sought to have the claims thrown out under California's anti-SLAPP statute, arguing they constituted strategic litigation against public participation.

Judge Colin Leis rejected that motion. His reasoning hinged on prior police investigation into Frank's allegations. The Miami-Dade Police Department had deemed her claims not credible, partly because she withheld text messages from investigators during their probe. Brown has consistently denied the accusation.

"The court cannot dismiss that a jury might believe [Brown's] denials over Frank's accusation that [Brown] forced non-consensual sex upon Frank—a factual question of credibility properly resolved by a jury," Leis wrote in his ruling. "[Brown] has established some minimal merit to his defamation cause of action sufficient for the lawsuit to proceed to its next stage."

The lawsuit now enters the discovery phase, where both sides exchange evidence and testimony. Settlement negotiations could still resolve the matter before any trial takes place. Neither Brown's nor Frank's representatives have publicly commented on the judge's decision.
