SPIN Buys Jam Band Hub Live For Live Music in March Deal
SPIN pulled off a shrewd acquisition on March 2, scooping up Live For Live Music, the jam band community's digital headquarters for over a decade. The deal brings founder Kunj Shah into SPIN's fold as Vice President of Events, along with his entire team who've been chronicling the Grateful Dead and Phish ecosystem since 2011.
Shah's operation built something rare: actual community around improvisational music culture. While most music media chases clicks, Live For Live Music cultivated trust through festival side shows and their Fest By Nite series during New Orleans Jazz Fest. SPIN CEO Jimmy Hutcheson recognized the value, noting they're "not just acquiring a media property" but "welcoming a culture and a loyal audience."
The timing aligns perfectly with SPIN's broader entertainment ambitions. The magazine already runs a Virgin Records partnership and produces content with the Yellowstone team. Now they inherit Live For Live Music's deep festival connections and event production expertise, starting with the 2026 Fest By Nite lineup already announced for Jazz Fest season.
Shah emphasized the deal preserves his platform's grassroots identity while adding corporate muscle. "What started as a passion project grew into a community that shows up for artists, the fans and for each other," he explained. Translation: the deadhead economy just got a major league budget.
